Market Street Bus Garage Renovation and Expansion

Paterson, NJ

DMR Construction has been awarded the $18.3 million contract to renovate and expand the historic Market Street Bus Garage in Paterson, a key transit facility that has served North Jersey for more than a century.

Originally built in 1903 and located within the Old Great Falls Historic District, the garage supports approximately 150 buses and plays a critical role in New Jersey Transit’s Northern Division operations. The project will modernize the facility while preserving its historic character.

The scope includes renovation of the existing structure along with construction of a new 3,200-square-foot addition to support future growth. Upgrades include new flooring in the main service area, a new elevator, and comprehensive mechanical, electrical, and plumbing improvements. The project also includes enhancements to life safety and monitoring systems, along with restoration of the historic brick façade, completed with careful attention to the building’s architectural integrity.

All work will take place within an active bus garage, requiring precise coordination to maintain daily operations. DMR’s experience in live transit environments allows construction to move forward safely and efficiently with minimal disruption.

The project also incorporates public art elements, including murals and mosaics, that reflect the site’s history and its role in the community.

This renovation strengthens New Jersey Transit’s infrastructure by improving reliability, expanding capacity, and preparing the facility for future transit needs, while preserving an important piece of the region’s history.
