AirTrain Newark Replacement Program
Newark, NJ
DMR Construction is proud to have been awarded the construction of the Maintenance Control Facility as part of the AirTrain Newark Replacement Program at Newark Liberty International Airport. This award represents a significant milestone for DMR and reinforces the firm’s experience delivering complex transportation and public sector infrastructure projects.
Led by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the AirTrain Newark Replacement Program is a major reconfiguration of the airport’s transit system, replacing the existing AirTrain with a modern automated people mover designed to meet current and future demand. While the overall program enhances passenger connectivity across the airport campus, the Maintenance Control Facility is a critical component supporting the system’s daily operations and long-term reliability.
DMR’s scope includes construction of the new Maintenance Control Facility located at the northern terminus of the AirTrain alignment, approximately 1,000 feet north of the existing Newark Liberty International Airport rail station. The facility consists of a primary building and supporting auxiliary structures that together form the operational backbone of the new AirTrain system.
The Maintenance Control Facility will house the system’s central control complex, serving as the command center for AirTrain operations. The facility includes administrative and operational offices, interior and exterior maintenance and repair areas, employee parking, loading docks, and dedicated electrical infrastructure, including an on-site substation and emergency generator. Designed to support both daily service and long-term maintenance needs, the facility will feature three maintenance tracks equipped with overhead bridge cranes and manual chain hoists, a turnback drive machinery room, multi-level maintenance platforms, a wash bay, and specialized equipment required for safe and efficient operations.
The importance of the Maintenance Control Facility cannot be overstated. As the operational heart of the AirTrain system, it ensures that vehicles are maintained, monitored, and dispatched safely and reliably, enabling uninterrupted service for millions of airport passengers each year. Constructing this facility requires careful coordination, technical precision, and an understanding of complex transportation systems - capabilities that align directly with DMR’s core expertise.
DMR brings extensive experience managing infrastructure projects within active transportation environments, where safety, logistics, and operational continuity are paramount. The firm’s work on the Maintenance Control Facility reflects its proven ability to execute technically demanding scopes while meeting the rigorous standards of public agencies and transportation authorities.
This award underscores DMR Construction’s growing role in delivering critical infrastructure across the region. By supporting the AirTrain Newark Replacement Program through construction of the Maintenance Control Facility, DMR is contributing to a modern transit system designed for performance, resilience, and long-term operational success at one of the nation’s busiest airports.
